Dr. Martens, the brand behind this shoe, has a storied history. The brand's origins can be traced back to 1945 in Germany, where Dr. Klaus Maertens, after sustaining a foot injury while skiing in the Bavarian Alps, designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole to make walking easier during the healing process. Dr. Maertens partnered with his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, to develop and produce the shoes. Initially, the concept of an air-cushioned sole was met with skepticism from many manufacturers, who saw it as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in Wollaston, England, decided to embrace the idea and created the first work boot with the revolutionary sole.
